The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Front-Line Caregivers, United for Our Patients and Our Profession

Patient Care Associates (PCAs) and Psychiatric Care Technicians (PCTs) at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH joined the IAM Healthcare union in 2024 following our historic organizing campaign.

We work at one of the nation’s largest and most diverse academic medical centers. It includes a Level I Trauma Center, major heart and cancer hospitals, and outpatient clinics providing specialized care to diverse patient populations. As PCAs and PCTs at OSU, we care for some of the sickest and most medically complex patients in central Ohio, as well as patients and families from across the Midwest.

Winning our first contract was a hard fight. Through relentless organizing, petitions, rallies, and informational picketing, we took action to win better staffing, improvements to compensation, professional respect, and a meaningful voice in patient care. Our contract, which took effect in 2025, includes new standards to support safe patient care, employee recruitment and retention, and a framework for continued progress.

Today, more than 1,000 PCAs and PCTs enjoy the benefits of our union contract. We have a team of dedicated union stewards and a growing voice in the workplace. While challenges remain, we have secured a powerful set of tools to make change in our workplace.
